Plot Overview
The novel opens by introducing King Lazwar, under the looming threat of a curse set by his adversary, King Darwazu. To break this spell, Lazwar decides to retrieve powerful artifacts. Before leaving on this critical mission, he names Yasiran, the city governor, as his successor .
In a dramatic turn, a monstrous demon named Za'aratun-layal appears to serve King Lazwar. The demon obeys, carrying the king and his entourage on a swift aerial journey across the skies .
After a prolonged flight, they land in a dense forest where they’re met with an ambush. Arrows rain upon them, resulting in heavy casualties. In the chaos, Lazwar tries and fails to cast a spell for protection .
Suddenly, a fearless twelve-year-old girl emerges, riding a massive leopard. She stops Lazwar and questions his presence, at once bold and mysterious. She introduces herself as Shuraiba bintu Murrasu and reveals that she’s been expecting him. She explains that her father foretold Lazwar's arrival and that only he can help free both her mother and Sharifa, a slave in Istanbul .
The story thus sets up a high-stakes quest: King Lazwar must secure the artifacts to break his curse and possibly rescue Sharifa and Shuraiba's mother, weaving themes of magical realism, destiny, and liberation .
